PHD


The Doctor of Philosophy in Management (PhD) has been designed to provide training and education with the objective of producing graduates with the capacity to conduct independent research at a high level of originality and quality, using action research or the case study method.

PHD: COURSE STRUCTURE
The course comprises the following components:
  • submission of the proposed research topic;
  • preparatory reading and an intensive Research Methods Seminar;
  • development of the thesis proposal;
  • appointment of a Research Supervisor and other members of the Supervisory Panel;
  • approval of the thesis proposal by the Supervisory Panel and subsequently by the Human Research Ethical Standards committee;
  • regular contact is encouraged between the candidate and the Research Supervisor (on a monthly basis at a minimum) by phone, fax, email and face-to-face sessions for guidance, support and feedback;
  • an annual meeting with the Research Supervisor in Adelaide or other suitable location; and
  • the writing up of a thesis under the supervision of the Research Supervisor.
In addition, Gibaran Graduate School of Business provides candidates with individual access to a computer-based virtual library.

PHD: DURATION

The length of the course is three years of full-time or six years of part-time study. Candidates are required to complete the course within a maximum of seven years.

PHD: RESEARCH

Gibaran Graduate School of Business (GGSB) has access to many recognised researchers in Australia and overseas and thus a wide range of research topics may be studied. Some possible research areas are:
Strategic Management; Financial Management; Human Resource Management; Information Management; Marketing Management; Quality Management; International Business; Entrepreneurial Studies; Corporate Leadership; Systems Management and Organisational Studies
PHD: ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
For admission to the course a candidate must have:
  • a masters degree or a bachelors degree with minimum second upper honours or equivalent; and
  • senior management experience for 3–5 years.
All candidates will be provisionally registered for the PhD programme, pending satisfactory progress in terms of the conditions of their candidacy.
For candidature to be confirmed, the candidate should demonstrate a capacity to undertake research at a doctoral level, by submitting a 20–30 page proposal outlining the conceptual framework and research design of the candidate's thesis.
Provisional candidature may be extended for a specified period to give the candidate a further opportunity to meet the conditions for confirmation of candidature.
Candidature will be terminated if the candidate has failed to comply with the conditions of candidature after having been advised in writing that failure to comply within the required time will result in termination of candidature.
