There is probably no business that can survive without proper documentation. Everything, from the date an item sells to the staff who disposed of such item to a customer, must be recorded. There are many reasons why all steps taken by staff in the conduct of the business' normal day-to-day operations must be properly documented.
For one, this brings a sense of organization to the business. Anything that is run with a sense organization is usually run effectively. Without this, a business can go wayward int he sense that the businessman wouldn't be able to keep track of the business' progress and whether or not its goals are achieved. When the business is run in an organized manner, it is easy to keep track of what's happening and it is easy to point out errors or lapses so everything can be corrected and business can improve. In the same way, properly documenting all transactions in the business will also allow a company to take note of its strong points so these can be focused on and profits can be maximized further.
Another way that proper documentation can be of value to a business or company is in the handling of accounts receivables. We know that accounts receivables can seriously affect a business' performance, especially when these receivables are not getting the attention they need. In fact, when this department is not made into a priority, cash flow can be seriously compromised. This means the business will be able to make use only of a limited amount as its income because a lot, if not most, of its earnings are in the form of sales that have not been paid in cash. This may be tolerable for large companies that do not rely on their day-to-day profit to sustain their operations. But for small businessmen, this can be a formula for disaster.
There are many other scenarios where proper documentation can make a great difference between he success and failure of a business. Whatever these scenarios are, the fact remains that without the right procedure for documenting all transactions, a business will not be able to function as effectively and successfully as possible. All decisions will be based on biases, not facts. Just imagine a company where nobody records each sale that is made. The growth of this type of business will be limited, if not impossible. Needless to say, making sure the records are in the right place and maintained by experts can offer any business the advantage of proper documentation.
