Functions of Advisory Boards

An advisory board provides a two-way system of communication between RUSD and Racine, which is essential to all educational programs or services. The very name of the committee signifies its function --- to give advice. Some of the areas of focus for our committee are:

Curriculum

Advisory boards are instrumental in keeping programs and courses up-to-date with the changing technology and methodologies of business and industry.

Instruction

Advisory boards may also assist RUSD in obtaining on-the-job training sites for students for cooperative agreements, clinical sites, etc. They can recommend resources and guest speakers for classes and other events; they often assist in the planning of special events; shadow day presentations, scholarship committees, interview seminars, etc.

Student Affairs

Advisory boards may review enrollment and placement information annually and offer advice in the development of marketing plans for recruitment of students, in the development of strategies for retention of students in the program.

Community/Public Relations

Committees may provide assistance in the development of community relations and help acquaint other people with the benefits RUSD programs.

Program Evaluation

Committees may review annual screening data and participate in the planning of in-depth program evaluations. The committee provides future directions for curriculum in the designated program area.

Student Organization Activities

The Racine Unified School District has three comprehensive high schools with active Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) chapters in DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, HOSA, SkillsUSA.Committees may provide input and assistance to the student organization, supporting the program. Possible advisory board activities:
  • Represent and inform the business community and RUSD about advantages of participation in Co-op & Apprenticeship programs.
  • Aid in the selection process and placement of prospective student/employees: committee members aiding students in preparing for job interviews
  • Help to set standards for employees who have student/employees: assessment of quarterly evaluation process and form (skills certification).
  • Prepare training supervisors to be effective as mentors: help in preparing training manuals and encouraging participation in training seminars for mentors.
