Recommended Values

In residential applications, occupant comfort is affected by temperature, humidity, air motion, clothing, the temperature of the interior surfaces of the room, and the quality of the indoor air.
The purpose of the HVAC system is to bring these factors in balance with the metabolic activity and the respiratory requirements of the occupants.
Manual RS provides information about the parameters that define comfort, the factors that affect indoor air quality, zoning issues, the performance of the thermal envelope, systems and system performance characteristics, equipment performance characteristics, equipment selection procedures, and equipment sizing procedures.
Manual RS guidance is complimented by other ACCA manuals that pertain to specific design procedures — Manual J (load calculations), Manual S (equipment selection), Manual D (duct system design), Manual T (air distribution devices), and Manual H (heat pumps).
Taken together, all comprise the recommended ACCA System Design Process.

Manual J Residential Load Calculation (8th Edition - Full)

MJ8 produces equipment sizing loads for single-family-detached homes, small multi-unit structures, condominiums, town houses and manufactured homes. This new version incorporates the complete MJ8-AE volume in a user friendly format. It provides quick supplemental details and advanced topics as well as supporting reference tables and appendices.

MJ8 also accommodates homes that have exceptional architectural features and life style accessories such as:
  • Dwellings that have limited exposure or no exposure diversity
  • Homes with large south-facing glass area or rooms with unusually large glass area
  • A thermally isolated solarium
  • Customized internal load estimates
MJ8 is sensitive to an increased variety of issues related to construction materials and methods including:
  • Fenestration loads for glass rated by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC)
  • Improved duct load models
  • Improved methods for estimating the effect of internal and external shading devices, including insect screens
  • Infiltration estimated based on blower door test
  • Sensitivity to latitude and altitude
  • Sensitivity to skylight glazing material, curb construction and light shaft construction
  • Heat gain sensitivity to roofing material, roof color and the use of radiant barrier
  • Heat loss and gain for log walls, structural foam panels, aerated autoclaved concrete block, insulated form concrete panels, brick walls, concrete walls, wood foundation walls, and any other types of walls and insulation options

Manual RS - Comfort, Air Quality, & Efficiency by Design                                             This manual takes contractors through the design stage to the completion of a successful residential heating and cooling system installation. The whole house concept of Manual RS includes special design elements that match the needs of today’s homeowners. With Manual RS, contractors can easily select, size and arrange the correct heating or cooling system components. The manual covers residential zoning issues— multiple, single-zone, and central multi-zone systems—and includes advice on working with homeowners to adapt the heating or cooling system design to meet modern home design features.

Manual T - Air Distribution Basics

Manual T shows you how to prevent drafts and stagnant air problems caused by improper sizing or incorrect equipment selection. It shows you, in step-by-step detail, how to select, size, and locate the supply air diffusers, grilles and registers, and the return grilles. It gives you examples of how to use manufacturers’ comprehensive performance data, calculate pressure losses, and control noise.
